Saddleback ( Philesturnus carunculatus )..

According to Maori legend, when the demi god Maui ensnared the Sun to bring it under submission he was understandably parched from his labours.

He called upon "Tieke", the Saddleback to fetch water within its wattles that his great thirst may be quenched.

However the wily Tieke pretended not to hear, infuriated Maui who siezed the belligerent bird across its back with his fiery hand.....

Gregarious, noisey and very active, these birds are a joy to be around....
