Orange on blue
Seen in the formal beds at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris, where the spring planting of orange flowers with touches of their complementary blue is inspired by Chevreul’s colour theory, in particular his law of simultaneous contrast - that two juxtaposed hues will be perceived as the most different possible when the brain adds to a perceived hue a little of the complementary of the juxtaposed hue. For 50 years, Chevreul ran the natural history museum of which this garden is a part.
The stated intention is that energy and dynamism mix harmoniously to create a captivating atmosphere, a poetic evocation of a journey in distant lands, where the warmth of the summer envelops every breath of air, impregnated with the intoxicating fragrance of Orange Blossom. 😉
Chevreul’s colour theory had a great impact on artists and the planting did remind me of Signac’s Setting Sun. Sardine Fishing. Adagio. Opus 221.
The Iceland Poppy they used here, 'Champagne Bubbles Orange' was perhaps the most intensely coloured I have ever seen.
