We have a nature phenomenon at the Wadden Sea. Millions of black starlings are gathering here before they go south for the winter. The make a stop at the Wadden sea, because the sea is full of nice food for the birds. Before they ground to feed every night they gather into huge formations. Its not known why exactly – best guess is to scare any enemies that might be waiting for them at the ground. In Danish we call it “Sort Sol” because the millions of birds are making the sun black. Directly translated it means “Black sun”. Locally we have translated it to “Black Starling” or “Starling Magic”. You don’t have to go to the Wadden Sea for the experience. You can see the starlings around Ribe. Here a few of the millions are crossing the skyline of Ribe this night….
