Black Rhino with Cattle Egrets (Explored 9/12/24)

We saw this amazing Black Rhino along with her year-old calf late in the day, so not in perfect light! She has a rather impressive horn. The Black Rhino is currently listed as "Critically Endangered" on the IUCN Red List. The estimate is that there are only about 3,000 adults left in the wild and are very close to extinction as a species. However, the good news in Kenya is that their conservation programs are seeing success and so there may yet be hope. The Black Rhino has a hooked lip which makes it easier to pluck leaves off bushes which is its preferred meal. The other species, White Rhinos, are grazers eating mainly grasses.

The conservancy where this Black Rhino lives has had great success in protecting their Rhinos and has not had a poaching incident in several years. They are well known in Kenya for their Rhino program, and so I feel comfortable sharing some photos of these amazing creatures.
