No I Will Not Do Your Nails

The full title is actually "Yes, I'm Vietnamese, No I will not do your nails". It is about a college aged Vietnamese girl I once knew. In an act of complete selfless love, her parents sent her to the USA and her sister to Canada when they were young in hopes of giving them a better life. The girls were only able to return to see the parents on rare occasions and I don't remember ever knowing the parents were able to come here to visit. As a parent, we wish the best for our children, but I don't know if I could bear to not watch my boys grow up and witness all that is their life.

 

I get a pedicure now and then and the shop I go to is owned by and employed by folks who came here from Vietnam - as are most in this area. They tell me fascinating stories of how they came here and I know they are thrilled to have new lives here. Lan (my little friend) had big aspirations and I'm pretty sure she'll do great things - hence the name of this work...
