1940s Era Cops

File: 2025005-0038

At the Severn Valley Railway station, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 7th June 2025.

About the photograph.

They are re-enactors playing the role of a 1940s era British police constables in a makeshift police station at the Kidderminster railway station, during the Severn Valley Railway’s Step Back to the 1940s event.

Both of them are simply of the same rank, the one on the left side with the pipe may simply be a desk officer, and not a sergeant.

Notice the police helmet on the desk, and next to it are two helmets that looked like upside down soup bowls. Those are often called the Brodie helmet and often have various nicknames, including battle bowler and tin hat. In the event of an air raid, the police officers would swap their standard police helmet for the military designed steel helmet for better protection.

Here in the photograph, they were simply standing like this while visitors enjoy their day out at the event.

The shot was done inside the station’s platform canopy, thus lighting is from outside, and was converted into black and white while in Adobe Lightroom.

About Severn Valley Railway.

The Severn Valley Railway is a 16 miles single track heritage railway line in Worcestershire and Shropshire, between the towns of Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. The railway line follows the course of the River Severn along the Severn Valley.

The train services are often hauled by a mix of vintage steam locomotives, and classic diesel locomotives, usually pulling resorted heritage carriages.

The Severn Valley Railway often holds special events during some weekends, and the Step Back to the 1940s event is one of the many events.
