The Two Simons: White / Red

File: 2023005-0358

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

When I was preparing the photos for uploading to Flickr, sometimes I would pick one, or two, or in rare cases three, photos for uploading. Then I would start writing an article about the subject. (Note: Flickr calls this “description” but I like to think of my written words as articles instead of descriptions.)

I picked those two, the white car (0358) and the red car (0377), and thought of giving them the titles of “The White One” and “The Red One”

But when I was doing research on who the drivers were, what are the cars they drive, by looking up in the programme guide I bought on that day, I noticed by chance, the drivers happen to have the same first name.

So I figure to call this set as The Two Simons. And give each a subtitle based on the colour of their cars.

The Two Simons: White.

In the above photo, file 0358.

This is Simon Baker from Worcester, racing uphill in his Porsche Carrera 197, bearing the number 207.

Note the vehicle registration plate (AKA the number plate) on the front, that says SR51 BKR. The first two letters SR, refer to where the car was registered, it was registered in Dundee, Scotland. The number 51 refer to the year it was registered, which was between September 2001 to February 2002.

About Shelsley Walsh.

Shelsley Walsh is a motorsports speed hill climb track in Worcestershire, and organised by the Midland Automobile Club (MAC).

It is one of the oldest motorsports event, having started in 1905, and held events every year, except for the two World Wars.

It is also a notably steep course by today’s hill climb standards, rising 328ft / 100m over its 1000 yards / 914 metres length.

The track and course do not belong to MAC, it is leased from the local landowner. The original lease ran for 99 years, and in 2005, a new lease was signed for the next 99 years.
