Unfinished Colourised of Ford Capri

File: M10-01

Malvern Common, off Peachfield Road, Malvern, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom. Date unknown, likely to be circa 1990 to circa 1995.

About the photographs.

This is a Ford Capri that used to belong to a friend of mine. Aside for the fact that this is a Mark III, produced between March 1978 to December 1986, which is all I know of it, I don’t know what engine or gearbox it got. It came in jet black colour. This was registered between August 1986 to July 1987 and my friend bought it second hand in the early 1990s.

He wanted some photographs of his car as he was thinking of selling it, and instead of the typical run-of-the-mill car photos where the car is show in the driveway, like with many private adverts, I suggested that he takes it out of town, and get a nice looking background, to give it better looking advert.

He agreed and we went out to the Malvern Common, which is on the south part of the town, simply drive off the road, and turn the car around for a good looking angle, against the background of the Malvern Hills.

He did not specificity asked for colour prints, and I told him I have black and white roll of film in my camera, so he agreed to black and white photos.

I took this photograph with my Minolta X-700 manual focus 35mm film SLR camera, and the roll of black and white film was Ilford HP5 Plus. I developed and printed the photos myself.

This is one of the copies that I scanned to an older Windows 98 computer sometime between 1998 to 2000.

At that time, I had a CorelDRAW version 3 software installed on my machine, as I needed to transform my graphic design skills from traditional to digital, by self-training myself in the use of digital graphic design.

As CorelDRAW 3 comes packaged with Corel Photo-Paint which is a raster based software, and I’ve heard that it’s possible to colourise a black and white image, so I thought to have a go. This is my first even attempt, and that was done maybe around between 1999 to 2001.

However this is an unfinished work, I never got a chance to colourise the car, because by then, I got a job, working in an office and started having kids, then divorced and ended up as a single parent, so I was busy.

About the Ford Capri.

The Ford Capri is a fastback coupe, designed by Philip T Clark, for Ford of Europe in the later 1960s, and was planned to be the European equivalent of the Ford Mustang.

Production started in November 1968 with what was known as the Mark I until 1973. It was replaced by the Mark II between 1974-1978, and finally replaced with the Mark III between 1978 to 1986.

Each of those generations came in various engine sizes, ranging from 1.3L to 3.0L, and often with 5 speed manual gear, with the option of 3 speed automatic gear.

Due to the lifestyle changes of many customers, with the popularity of hatchbacks and saloons like Fiesta, Escort, and Sierra on the rise, Ford saw no point in developing the Capri into a 4th Generation so the Capri came to an end in 1986.

Those models have often been seen in British television series during the 1970s and 1980s, two of the most notable series were Minder and The Professionals.
