File: 2022006-0526

Bristol Flyers vs Manchester Giants, British Basketball League (BBL) game on Friday 23rd September 2022, at SGS WISE Arena, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

This is American born Thomas Bell III for Bristol Flyers attempting to try for a score. Manchester Giants player, American born, William Lee wearing number 18 jumped up in front of Bell III, and right after this, Lee successfully knocked the ball off course, so it missed the hoop.

In the first half of the match, Flyers were behind by about 20 points, but in the second half, they made up for it. The final outcome at end of the game was

Flyers 79 – 78 Giants.

On this day, Bristol Flyers were the home team, while Manchester Giants was the visiting team. I bought two courtside tickets, for myself and my best friend.

About the teams.

The Bristol Flyers was formed in 2006 by a merger of two former Bristol based teams, the Filton Flyers and the Bristol Academy, to become known as Bristol Academy Flyers. They started in the English Basketball League, in Division 2, and one year later, they moved up to Division 1.

By 2013, they got financial backing from the owner of Bristol City football club. As part of the deal, they moved into the top level franchise based BBL, for the 2014-15 season, that was when they became known simply as Bristol Flyers. Their highest finish in BBL was 4th place during the 2021-22 season.

The current Manchester Giants, not to be confused with the original Manchester Giants from 1975 to 2001, was formed in 2011. Graham Herstell put together a plan for a new Manchester based basketball team, and revived the Giants brand.

The Giants started in the top level professional BBL with the 2012-13 season. As of from 2020 to present, they are based at the National Basketball Performance Centre, located in the Belle Vue area of Manchester, which they share with the Manchester Mystics, a women’s team in the WBBL.
