Holtzapffel - A Cornish Idyll

Last week was a bumper week for top-class puzzle offers on eBay UK - no fewer than 5 Holtzapffels and a very large Tuck's Zag-Zaw, as well as a Limited Edition Stave and a big Meredith Worsfold puzzle.

I'm not buying puzzles any more - at least, I wasn't, until I spotted this Holtzapffel puzzle with no photo of the completed puzzle. That offered the same challenge, and element of surprise, as when this puzzle was first sold in the 1930s.

The 500-piece puzzle is, of course, beautifully cut along colour lines. The print is by the British artist Walter Langley, a founder of the Newlyn School of plein air painters.
