Ballina's Big Prawn originally built in 1989 at a Ballina petrol service centre is another of Australia's iconic big things.
The final switch of traffic to all lanes of the Ballina Bypass occurred on 28 April 2012 resulting in the Ballina service centre soon becoming financially unviable. The Service Centre with the Big Prawn attached was closed down leaving the future of the Big Prawn in serious doubt.
Ballina's much loved 'Big Prawn' was saved in the nick of time from demolition when hardware Chain, Bunnings agreed to retain the iconic landmark on the site after they purchased the former River St service centre land for the new Bunnings Store.
The 9 metre high giant crustacean was then completely renovated by Bunnings at a cost $400,000, given a tail, and re-erected directly adjacent Bunnings huge new Ballina store which opened in July 2013.
