Galax

A North Carolina native having shiny, long-stalked, roundish heart-shaped leaves bright green in summer, bronzed to reddish in winter

Our first stop was the United States Postal Service, Sunset, SC. It was very nice but we didn't stay long.

Our second stop was mere minutes later, for lunch in the picnic area of Long Shoals Wayside Park along Little Eastatoe Creek on South Carolina's nationally designated scenic route, officially known as the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway (South Carolina Highway 11). This Pickens County park has a natural water slide, a hidden gem of the Upstate.

Our third stop was at Keowee-Toxaway State Park. Just a stop.

Our fourth stop was Devils Fork State Park, our destination, to see the Oconee Bells, a rare and beautiful plant found only in a few counties in the southern Appalachian Mountains; we saw leaves but were too early for the bells (we hope for next time).

Our fifth stop was on Hwy. 178 (Pickens Highway) near Rosman, to fill up a water jug and replenish our water bottles with cold fresh mountain water piped to the roadside.

Our sixth stop was for groceries, in Brevard. (We eat well.) And then we drove home. Joe drove the whole way. Thanks, Joe!
