One year after opening, the Torre Latinamericana successfully withstood Mexico's 1957 magnitude 7.9 earthquake. Mexico City's Angel of independence monument was toppled. The tower has since survived further earthquakes unscathed including the 8.1 magnitude 1985 earthquake.
