Entry Garden

As you walk into the Botanical Garden, you are greeted by the vibrant and bold Entry Garden, planted in 1998, and now well established. Here you will find dense plantings of brightly colored flowers and striking vegetation from subtropical and temperate zones. Ceramic planters, sculptures and monastery stones can also be spotted tucked away within the foliage. In the courtyard to the right of the plant arbor sits a relic of San Francisco’s transportation past: A giant stone planter that actually started life as a water trough for the horses that once pulled much of the city’s transportation vehicles.

To the right as you walk towards the kiosk, is the Bookstore, which has been described as a 'tiny trove of inspiration for lovers of the natural world. Want to take a bit of the Botanical Garden home with you? Just next to the bookstore lies the Plant Arbor, re-stocked twice a week with plants from our very own nursery. Here you can purchase that eye-catching specimen you saw growing in the garden. To the left is the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture, established in 1972. It is northern California's most comprehensive horticultural library, housing approximately 27,000 volumes and 350 plant and garden periodicals.
