海底隧道是香港首條跨海隧道，1969年9月1日動工，1972年8月2日港督麥理浩爵士主持剪綵儀式後，與藝人沈殿霞乘坐老爺車首先使用，自始汽車渡輪服務大受影響。1975年，港府將鐵路總站遷往紅磡填海區現址配合，並興建了大量多層停車場。
The Cross-Harbour Tunnel is the first tunnel in Hong Kong built underwater. It was constructed from 1969 and completed in 1972. Prior to the opening of the tunnel, cross-harbour vehicular traffic depended on ferries. In 1975, the government relocated the Kowloon Station in the present site, adjacent to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. Many multi-storey car parks were constructed afterwards.
