Hung Hom was mainly occupied by Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock, Green Island Cement Company and Hok Yuen Power Station in the early development before WWII.. Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock, founded in 1863, was once among the largest in Asia. The dockyard was heavily bombarded by air forces in WWII. In 1985, the dockyard land was transformed into a private housing estate, the Whampoa Garden, the second-largest private housing estate in Hong Kong, after Mei Foo Sun Chuen.
黃埔船塢、青洲英泥廠和中華電力的鶴園發電廠為紅磡最早期的工業設施。1863年，杜格拉斯等人於廣洲成立黃埔船塢，及後於香港仔、大角咀和紅磡設立船塢，當中以紅磡最大，曾是亞洲最大規模船塢之一，二戰時曾遭到轟炸，1985年重建為黃埔花園。
