Printer's Devil

In the early 1950s my father at left in photo, wearing tee shirt and apron, was an apprentice printer (a printer's devil)..he became a journeyman and then master printer. He worked as a printer for the New York Post from 1956 until he retired in 1986

 

Printer's Devil

It is a belief among printers that a special devil haunted every print shop, performing mischief such as inverting type, misspelling words or removing entire lines of completed type. The apprentice became a substitute source of blame and came to be called a printer's devil by association.
