Elseworld Batman - Volume 2: #1
"He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster.
And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee."
-Friedrich Nietzsche
I used to believe in justice, and peace. But the man I used to be is dead now. He died with the Batman. It's been two years now, two years since I retired. Two years since I put away Krill, and two years since I cut ties with everyone I knew.
Dick, Barbara, Jim, Duke, Garfield, Talia, and Selina. When will this list end? I have no family. Duke didn't take my absence well. I've been reading in the papers about a Vigilante in Gotham, and I haven't heard the name in years. ‘Nightwing’.
It looks like Duke abandoned Robin. In the end they all do. They became men. Well, not Jason. He's still in the ground, my greatest failure.
The Joker is gone, he left no trace. I've looked for over eight years, and still nothing, and Quinzel knows nothing.
People get murdered, raped, and robbed everyday in this damned city. And I've done nothing to stop it, I now realize how wrong and selfish of me that truly is. How is someone supposed to live in Hell on Earth with no guardian angel?
Even Superman is gone. What kind of world is this? One of the only symbols of hope in this godforsaken world. Clark inspired a lot of people. And he inspired me. He was my best friend, and he's dead.
The only ones left are Allen, Queen, Stewart, and Curry. The world needs heroes, but I'm not qualified anymore. I'm no hero.
What will happen when I stare into a mirror? Perhaps I'll see something this time. Perhaps I'll see Bruce Wayne, a man traumatized by his Parents' death.
Maybe I'll see Batman, a hero, grinning for cameras, working with the police, his blue cape flowing over his grey costume as he makes Gotham a better place.
But I know what I see now. I see a tortured being, clad in black, with monstrous ears protruding from its head. I see a monster, who only causes pain and suffering. I see The Batman, I see the real me.
