Pioneer Peak from Reflections Lake

Pioneer Peak is a 6,398 foot mountain in the Chugach Mountains in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley. I took this photo of Pioneer Peak from Reflections Lake next to the Knik River. You can see the snow capping the mountain. The snow covering has been expanding as rain comes through, as it snows at the higher elevations, and the coverage has slowly been moving down the mountain as winter approaches. You can see the effect of the wind as it passes the peak, condensing into cloud from the moisture as the snow on the mountain evaporates.

A prominent landmark in the Mat-Su Valley, Pioneer Peak was named for the pioneers of the Matanuska agricultural colony of the mid-1930s.
