Common Merganser

I captured this Common Merganser at Spenard Crossing in Anchorage. It's the first I've seen mergansers since May so they must be passing through for the winter. This one had some vegetation on its beak from fishing in the lake.

I thought this was a red-breasted merganser but the bird ID group says it's a common, possibly a first year, so sex can't be determined. So much to learn!
