Steps to nowhere

The hospital was designed by John Lamb Murray to accommodate 500 patients and opened as the Lanark District Asylum, The complex included gardens, a farm, a power-plant, a reservoir, a railway-line and a cemetery, the nursing complex was later added in 1931

After the introduction of the “Care In The Community” act in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in 1988.

There is also a series of tunnels that run under the hospital & old now demolished nursing complex, these are no longer assessable
