In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), one of the world’s poorest countries, only 1% of the population has access to a bank account. UNCDF’s MicroLeadProgramme is helping Opportunity International bring safe and affordable access to financial services in DRC. Opportunity International Trust Group members meet weekly to repay their loans and receive training in financial literacy from their loan officer. As a group, these women have pledged to guarantee each other’s loans and support one another’s businesses. Because collateral is not necessary, credit becomes available to those previously locked out of formal financial services.
