Last season, I had a second bluebird box installed just in case more than one set of bluebirds wanted to take up residency. That did not happen but the box was left up anyway.
It looks like Phil (red-bellied woodpecker) is very interested in the box. He's been working on it to make modifications for a larger hole for a few days now. It is located on the opposite side of the yard from the original bluebird box and it's not in the line of sight. When he wasn't looking, he got a little assistance with the modifications. I hope he is happy when he sees they box today.
This courting and nesting season should be pretty interesting.
