When I first spotted the pole sign still standing at the Midvale Garage I was pretty much certain that it had once been an Elf forecourt. The style and proportions of the sign and the pole and how the sign is fixed make that really likely. As a result petorl sales must have ended here quite a long time ago, some way back into the 20th century. No old images around on the internet that might make it certain, sadly. I guess it could just about have been a Shell site, but I don't recall ever seeing a Shell sign fixed from the side like that. Here's a close up of the sign.
