Total - Abbey Road Service Station, Leiston, Suffolk IP16 4JA July 1991 3
In the space of just over three years, the Abbey Road Service Station changed appearance twice, first from Total to Butler, and then from the mid period Butler livery to the final one. Previously I only had the one photo of this garage when branded Total, as well as near contemporary ones that I had taken long after fuel sales ended so it's great to have two more eras to be able to add into the equation now. Add in Spottedlaurel's photo of the site when it was Murco branded and a fairly full history of the site over the last thirty five years has been established.
Here it is pictured in 1991 as a Total site but soon about to change to Butler. The main things to look for apart from this excellent Total livery are the pumps, pretty old models for the era, and they would soon change. The cars on view are a fairly typical range one might have expected to see in this era. to the left a Peugeot 505, Ford Cortina and Vauxhall Carlton, an Alfa maybe filling up, and then to the right the white car is a Metro, the bronze car an Audi and the nearer two another Vauxhall and a VW maybe. Corrections welcomed as ever, I can't possibly have got these all rightt!
Below I've added the later Butler images, Spottedlaurel's Murco image when the garage was under the ownership of Kerridges, and my near contemporary photo showing the site as it is now, Appleton Engineering.
