Esso - Pocklington, North Yorkshire circa 1955
Two images of the view along Railway Street in Pocklington from roughly two decades apart. Lots has changed here, and from my point of view, not for the better! Most obviously the railway has gone, that may have led to Railway Streeet seemingly being somewhat shorter than I think it once was. The line closed in November 1965 but the level crossing took some time to be removed.it had gone by the time the later image was taken, see below. Indeed although the platforms for the station here were demolished, all the buildings remained as did the train shed and some are now incorporated into the local school's buildings. The station house is a private residence (seen on the right here) and the goods shed is now part of a Travis Perkins yard.
Further into the distance towards All Saints church an Esso garage is seen. That also went at some point but I can't say exactly when. It looks like the site of the garage was occupied by a shop called Furnish and Fettle in 2021. I do wonder if the roundabout that is adjacent now was created partly by taking some of the land from the forecourt of the garage.
Here's roughly the same view from March 2010.
