Regent - 52-56 Pritchard's Road, Bethnal Green, London E2 9AP circa 1960

This photo was a mystery location, took me a long time to work out where it was. At first I was thinking Kennington, as the gas holders there are well known, always on view from the Oval cricket ground. That proved to be wrong, so I started searching for other locations of gas holders in London, difficult as of course many have totally disappeared. After a few attempts I came up with a really convincing viewpoint which is the address given. It's not totally precise as the numbers don't exist anymore, but it's very close I think! Certainly by going through this exercise it made me realise that there were many distinctive if subtly different designs of gas holder, the ones here in Bethnal Green are an exact match!

I love images of this type, showing London in an era when it still had cobbled streets and quirky little back street garages, there used to be hundreds of them dotted around the capital. A row of pumps adorned with Regent globes means this has to be no later than 1967, and in truth, it's somewhat earlier than that, I reckon about 1960.

Can't find out any more about the place but at least I worked out where it was!
