National - A5034 Junction Mere, Cheshire 22nd August 1967
Here's today's Thursday throwback. This was originally posted in May 2019 and again the re-scan makes a massive difference to the view, especially that of the garage. I'll link to the original below.
It seems amazing that there was a time when you could park a moped at the side of a main road like that, and at the corner of a junction, but back in the late 1960s I guess it was perfectly fine. Indeed the moped we see here features in a handful of old slides I have so back then there was someone taking photos of garages. This one is a favourite of mine, everything in the image is just so perfect. The immaculately cut grass, the even black and white kerb, the weather and of course the petrol station!
The March 2009 Streetview shot shows a garage still in place with canopy and totem - not long after this would change, the canopy would go and any traces that it ever sold petrol but it remained to close to the present day a site for car sales. The most recent view suggests that the premises are now unoccupied. It also shows that the trees and other flora have grown considerably and as a result has blocked the view of the garage from this point. The 2011 view shows a garage called Rather Special Vehicles now only selling cars and by 2016 a company called VIP Cars. Judging by the colour of the canopy and the shape of the totem I would imagine that Q8 was the last brand of petrol sold here.
