Multiple Brands - Exeter Road, Winkleigh, Devon EX19 8JJ circa 1935

It took me a little while to realise but this is the same place as the Mid Devon Motor Company in the present day. It's changed a fair bit of course, but Winkleigh isn't a big place so locating the same view as this didn't take too long.

The biggest change is that in time a canopy was added, and I think that as a result of that, the building was extended outwards so the upper floor was above the canopy. That suggests that in this view the building was only just to the left out of shot. It also seems clear that the pump island was relocated, at least by being rotated forty five degrees or so. I'm also pretty certain that the forecourt was reduced in size for road junction improvements.

This picture was taken in about the mid 1930s when forecourts generally offered a variety of brands. Quite a few on offer here,

from left to right Power, Redline, National Benzole, Essolene and Shell. Other things of interest are the sign, almost an early pole sign which appears to have a small amount of lighting, an RAC sign, and the chap cheerfully smoking a pipe by the pumps. Health and Safety would be decades away!

The garage would go on to become a solus site, no idea of any branding history until the 21st century when it was clearly last branded Anglo or Repsol.

Below you can see a similar view of the garage in the near present day, but the Streetview will be a much more accurate replication of this view.
