Former Petrol Station - Birchfield Garage, Much Wenlock, Shropshire TF13 6AL 1

This is probably one of the most photographed old garages in the country. It has a more interesting recent history than many sites as the old pumps have been restored, on this occasion actually very nicely, and given others have captured this site both in the case of Richard's photo below, when it was at its most run down, and in Dan Lockton's photo when it was still serving petrol and had the extremely rare Space brand on sale. Indeed Dan's image is the only one I can find from before the garage became so run down, and I'm not going to link to the dozen or more other images with one level of artistic intent or another, a simple search of Flickr will bring them all up. Dan adds a little history of the site in the caption with his image but then goes off into a lengthy discussion on the history of the Space brand which will only be of interest to a few, but if it is then well worth reading!

Reading various tit-bits on other web pages leads me to think that the garage last sold fuel at a price of 50.5p a litre, so well into the later 1990s.

One of the surviving family members, Sarah Brazier, claims that fuel was last sold from here in 1971 but that's clearly not true given Dan's image from 1990. Apparently the garage itself is still in use, presumably just for storage, but it is still privately owned and not abandoned so one has to be respectful when visiting here.
