Esso - 13 (Approx) Between Towns Road, Cowley, Oxford, Oxfordshire 15th January 1980
This site has now totally disappeared having partially done so a long time ago. The filling station part of the site went way back in time, the forecourt eventually met its final demise just a few years ago when the site was cleared and turned into new student accommodation. That new build is listed as being 13 Between Streets Road but whether or not it was back in the 1970s I do not know. given how hot the weather is going to be over the coming days (at least round my way, we're promised 33 degrees tomorrow) I though I'd post a reminder of how it can sometimes be the exact opposite!
This is a lovely period photo of Esso styling of the 1970s, especially the garage doors with many narrow vertical windows with rounded ends.
The winters in this era were especially cold ones, I remember them well, 1980 and 1981 both had plenty of snow, and later on 1985 and 1986 were also seriously cold! Here at the start of 1980, there are many tired old cars on view, but a more modern looking Transit van dominates the scene. The only car that looks modern is the one far right, is it a Lancia Beta or a VW Scirocco. Instinctively I think it's a Scirocco.
By the earliest Streetview this was a bare forecourt selling second hand cars under the name Swan Motor Centre but eventually that went by 2018. Here's the view on Streetview when it was Swan Motor Centre. One can still clearly see the remnants of the Esso styling in the garage door windows.
