Independent - North Street, Crewkerne, Somerset 1999
I took this photo in 1999 along with another added below of this run down site with its unusual "petrol" sign. The sign has a strong look of Q8 about it, so I do wonder if that was its last brand after Texaco, which it was for all the 1980s and into the 1990s, Esso which it was from 1973 to about 1980 and Cleveland which it had been in the late 1960s and up to 1973.
I really only strongly remember the site as Esso in the 1970s, that's the era when my brother and I would be given ten pence to go and buy sweets from here as it was a stone's throw from my grandmother's house.
I recently discovered an older image my dad had taken of this end of North Street and a view across Ashlands Farm, also added below, where a 1970s style Texaco sign can just be seen in the bottom left corner.
In recent years this has been a hand car wash site, the totem still stands as does the canopy but the pumps had been removed in the last years of the previous century or thereabouts. I've
also added below a couple of photos of it more recently as a hand car wash.
