Multiple Brands - Calver, Derbyshire circa 1950

This is a delightful image of days long since passed. The village petrol station seen here is, in the present day, a cafe called Cafe 19. I'm not sure what the nineteen is a reference to. Actually to be truthful, it's just the canopy that's been adapted to become a cafe, and what a canopy it is. I'm not sure I've ever seen another one quite like it. Indeed it is amazing to see that the canopy has survived all these years, but the house behind it has not! Not the expected outcome.

The lovely row of pumps all have globes but it's hard to work out many of the brands on show. Cleveland far left and Regent are both certainly there but after that I'm stuck. Possibly a Shell one. My feeling is that even when this image was taken, many of the globes were vintage items. The garage would go on to be an Esso site in the 1960s.

Elsewhere there are other details to appreciate, especially the pre-Warboys direction sign, and on the wall of the public house, the large advert for Mansfield Ales. The pub is still there, in the present day the Eyre Arms, although I'm not sure if it was back here. Calver does have a petrol station in the present day, just round the corner from here. It is BP branded now but was a Cleveland site in the 1960s, and from this view it's to the right on the main road running left to right - see below.

you can just see the canopy edge in the Streetview here
