Butler - Court Barton Garage, Crewkerne, Somerset circa 1985
This photo was a lovely and amazing surprise when I discovered it last week. I had several boxes of old photos numbering maybe a thousand or more, nearly all old family photos and others recording everyday life at what is now my business but was originally my mother's. In a large bundle of my dad's stuff were lots of photos he had taken in Crewkerne on various visits in the 1980s. I have to be honest and say I'm not sure exactly why he took this photo apart from for memories of his childhood perhaps, but I'm so glad he did.
The Court Barton garage was one of those tiny outlets one only saw in this era, and earlier; they've all gone in the modern era.
Court Barton is a short street near the centre of Crewkerne and part of it forms a weird one way system where the roads were too narrow for the A30 to run straight through the small town centre. I remember it well from my childhood, if we had headed out west in the morning then we had to come down this way on the return journey, almost passing this garage, although it wasn't quite on the route of the A30 by a handful of yards. I ought to remember what brand was being sold here in the 1970s, I think it was BP, but I can't say with certainty. There was definitely a BP garage somewhere around here in that era so maybe it was here.
Here in this image I am guessing it is about 1985 or thereabouts, hard to be sure, but I am certain that this image pre-dates Dan Lockton's image of the garage by a good few years. Here we see the frontage includes a large window decorated with colourful signs which was no longer there when Dan took his photo.
Sadly the only other image of this garage that existed, which Dan includes a link to in his photo description, is no longer visible due to the webpage/website having expired!
Here's much the same view in the present day, as can be seen all traces of the garage have gone apart from the entrance still visible, now converted as a garage for the house.
