Globe - Foster and Wilkins, Dawson Street Garage, Dawson Street, Oxford 20th December 1974

Here's a shot of Dawson Street garage from the mid 1970s when by now it is Globe branded although it is really hard to see that is the case - look closely on the front of the somewhat obscured pump. It had been Regent branded back in the 1950s and possibly the 1960s too, see below. Eventually the premises here would be radically altered, the shop on the corner just beyond would be demolished and the garage would be opened out to have an actual forecourt. I don't know exactly when that happened but certainly by 1980. I presume this was done as, if not already here, certainly by then, there was a bigger rival garage situated next door.

Garages like this, tiny side street concerns, were quite common in this era but almost all disappeared when roadside petrol delivery was curtailed.

Eventually the garage closed down and is now Rafaela, at least it was in 2019. The other garage was entirely demolished and made way for student accommodation.

Dawson Street is now a cul-de-sac and it’s hard to see how a garage could ever have survived into the 21st century in such a small street.

Here’s roughly the same view in the present day.
