Esso - North Oxford Garage, 276, 292 Banbury Road, Summertown, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 7DY 3rd Febraury 1977

Lots of lovely period details here to appreciate. The stand out feature is the BMW sign, It looks very much like it is suspended from an older style Esso frame. The Castrol signs are also great to see and there's a relatively early Barclaycard sign too. The floor mounted price board is also a relative rarity, petrol around 80p a gallon in this era. The North Oxford Garage were clearly dealers for Vauxhall cars in this era. I don't know exactly what happened to the garage after this photo was taken, certainly it still existed for some time longer and as an Esso site due to the photo of the Esso pole sign from 1980 also posted today, but eventually it closed down, and the earliest Streetview shows the remnants of these premises with forecourt stripped and little going on. In the present day the garage building was demolished and a large modern retail unit stands here.
