Former Petrol Station - Hawkes Car Centre, Mustow Street, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1XL 3

Hawkes car centre was originally established in 1928, so they are now four years away from a centenary. The stand out feature at these premises are the two old Avery Hardoll pumps which haven't seen use for a very long time but are kept in very good condition, acting like sentries either side of the main garage entrance. Earlier Streetview shots show the pumps had globes reading Est. 1928 on them, which in some ways is probably better than the current Shell ones, I think reproductions. Does anyone know if the black font was used in a specific situation, maybe for a specific type of fuel, diesel perhaps? They are a recent addition, only appearing for the first time about five years ago. I found one old image of the site, in the middle of a little slide show on the Autotrader listing for the garage, the image taken I think pre-war with different but similar pumps in the same positions as seen here, the left with a Power globe on it and the right with a Shell globe.

Spottedlaurel took photos here way back in 2009 when the globes were different, I'll add his image below. I understand from seeing his image that Hawkes were once Lada and FSO dealers, nothing to shout about really!

This shot is probably my favourite, if only for the passing car and my timing which was actually perfect, even though at the time I was annoyed it had interfered with my shot! The reflections are just right! Happy to admit it was a fluke :o)
