Multiple Brands - JD Barclay and Son, 242-254 Banbury Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire circa 1959
I mentioned a while back when I posted a different JD Barclay site that I had some more photos of their sites across time in Oxford. This one is certainly the oldest! This image was dated December 1967 but clearly that's wrong. Supposedly it went with a story about fuel shortages. There is a second date on the image which is possibly 15th June 1959, that seems far more likely!
It's a bit of an odd image, some of the details are weirdly highlighted such as the chap to the left filling up, his hair looks strange, and so does the mouth of the person in the car to the right. All the same an amazing period image showing a row of pumps featuring all of the Shell-BP brands at this time, the rarest perhaps by this era the Dominion one which as a brand had largely been phased out pre-war.
The garage is all long gone, now an M&S supermarket on the ground floor but otherwise known as Barclay House in tribute to the Barclay family.
Below you can see the Jet branded garage previously posted that was a JD Barclay premises back in the day.
