Esso Research Centre, Abingdon, Oxfordshire 27th Aug 1970 3

Here we see a "clean view" of the forecourt including now the period Esso pole sign, although it is mounted off-centre, not sure how often that actually happened in real life. The central pump remains from the 1963 shot but the outer two have been updated to those so familiar to those of us who visited Esso stations in the 1970s. However the forecourt building looks entirely bare compared to the 1963 shot. Here it really doesn't look like a real petrol station, more like one found on a model railway.

It's design is largely based on ones produced on the continent for a few years prior to this.

No Streetview for these of course, and in any event, the Esso Research Centre closed down a long time ago. There is a Facebook group dedicated to the research centre should anyone be interested.
