AS Ockwell - The Garage, Three Horse Shoes, Main Road, Peterston-Super-Ely, Cardiff, South Wales CF5 6LH 1
AS Ockwells garage has become quite well known now for its amazing retro refit, all for show of course, but the old pumps beautifully restored with period globes are lovely to see. Add in some other details like the original Mobil pegasus logo on the wall, the original garage frontage being maintained and other period signs on display. One of the pumps on site is one actually in use some time ago, indeed the garage had only just stopped selling petrol in the earliest Streetview shot, back then branded UK, and the garage featured in at least one episode of Gavin and Stacey, if only in the background as various characters drove past. In that era the Mobil Pegasus sign was still there, but then painted green for some reason. There were enough features in addition to that Pegasus logo for me to be fairly certain the garage was once branded Mobil. Streetview also shows that for some time between 2011 and 2020 all the lovely old signs had been taken down, only to now reappear and, in some cases, also restored. Overall one has to say this is a lovely and charming place now and I take my hat off to the person or people who did all this work.
Not many older images of the place about. Oxfordshire Churches has one from 2016 showing the more standard pumps on the forecourt just about showing UK branding and the Mobil Pegasus has reappeared by then and fully repainted. You can see that below, first comment. Also an earlier one from 2011 taken by Phil Tilter when the UK pole sign was still standing and the garage had only a few years earlier stopped selling petrol - also see below.
I also found out that the garage has been in the same family for a very long time through two generations.
It goes without saying I'd love to see a much older photo of the garage to see how it looked in say the 1970s or 1980s.
Peterston Super Ely was also in the news earlier this year after the very sad story of two teenagers being killed whilst riding an e bike in the area and the riot that followed that. It seemed so unlikely that could have happened given how charming and peaceful it seemed here just a few weeks earlier.
