Regent - Dawson Street Garage, Dawson Street, Oxford, Oxfordshire early 1950s
This is the earliest shot I have of the Dawson Street Garage in Oxford. I have others but I’m saving them for later! There were if not at this point in time, then later on, two rival garages in Dawson Street, the other being St Clements Garage which makes sense as this area of Oxford is called St Clements. I only have the one photo of that garage and it was branded National in the 1970s, that will follow at some point in the future. Eventually this garage expanded considerably from the tiny garage entrance single pump delivery we see here to having a bigger forecourt. Eventually I think in late 2002 the forecourt was demolished to make way for student accommodation but the buildings remain. If so it seems likely the garage was on the corner of Dawson Street and Cowley Road. Dawson Street is now a cul-de-sac and it’s hard to see how a garage could ever have survived into the 21st century in such a small street.
Here’s roughly the same view in the present day, hard to really see it’s the same location!
