Shell - Dartmoor Garage, Two Bridges Road, Princetown, Yelverton, Devon PL20 6QS June 1987
If it weren't for the cars with clear registration years, one might imagine this photo was much older than it is. The Shell sign on view is a very old mostly 1960s design and certainly one would not have expected to see it by the end of the 1970s so here in 1987 it's a very rare survivor. The garage itself did not survive to the present day but it did get fairly close. Its last branding was in the Keltic and Jet livery which can be seen on Streetview.
Dan Lockton has a great photo of the actual forecourt of this place taken just a couple of years later than this photo where the same old Shell sign is still standing. Sidmouth Ian has a photo of it as it is much closer to the present day, as recent as last Christmas, and both are added below.
In the text with Dan's photo he mentions that this garage went on to be UK branded. He also speculates that it might be the garage at the highest altitude in the UK, it's certainly quite possible. With my football knowledge I know that Oldham Athletic's ground was the highest in England so I'd suggest a garage around there might also be a contender, not that there was ever a football league ground anywhere around here of course! Princetown is 1400 feet above sea lever, so pretty high for England. Oldham itself is only 700 feet above sea level but parts of the metropolitan borough reach 542 meters, so about 1700 feet.
Here's the Streetview showing the Keltic/Jet livery.
