Multiple Brands - High Street, Lee on the Solent, Hampshire circa 1950

Looking at the High Street in the present day one could hardly imagine that there was ever a petrol station in this location. It looks like the garage was called Smith Brothers and they had five pavement mounted pumps with swing booms to serve customers. There's a nice range of brands on sale too, two types of Cleveland, Esso Ethyl, Shell and National Benzole. Hard to date the photo, it might be just pre-war, maybe just after. Over to the right we see the back of a pre-Warboys roadsign. One of the buildings over to the right gives a hint of Art Deco in its construction, but those hints have since gone. The streetlighting is also quite exotic

Here's the same view in the present day.
