Former Petrol Station - Burford, Oxfordshire 2
The nearer white building here was once a petrol station, and more recently than you might imagine. it was still selling BP petrol in 1996 or even 1997. It had, of course, been through some other brands over the years, but all seemingly based around the one time Shell BP group. The earliest image I have seen of it is an old postcard I have dating from I think the 1930s, a lovely image of times gone by, a period piece really, where it is selling those same three brands. Many others have taken photos of it over more recent times and we can chart its branding history decade by decade as a result. Glen Fairweather's photo from 1974 shows it as Shell branded, TM Visser's photo shows it as a Shell in 1978, Reynardbizzar's 1985 photo shows it as a National, Spottedlaurel has a postcard from a little later than that where it is by then BP, and then into the 1990s Dave R has a 1991 photo of it with the newer BP logo and later still I have seen photos taken by Petrolmaps and Dan Lockton of it still as BP and still serving fuel in 1995 and 1996.
The other thing my old postcard shows which none of these other images does, is that there were two other garages in the 1930s along the same stretch of road, one almost opposite this one and the third much further down the hill on the opposite side.
This view matches my old postcard as best as I could manage.
