Pace - Barkway Service Station, Barkway, Hertfordshire in the Snow 1

With the demise and demolition of A Drayton and Son in Barley, this is the only petrol station left now on the B1368 all the way from Flint Cross where there is an Esso to Puckeridge where there is the wonderful Amco branded Vintage Service Station, a distance of some fifteen miles. There used to be at least six and maybe more. Luckily between a few others and me, all of them are recorded to one degree or another. Running from Flint Cross to Puckeridge there was the aforementioned A Drayton and Son (selling I think Total, then Q8 and then Pace) and Richmonds in Barley (previously BP and Arndale, may have been other brands), Bonds Garage with amazing retro Summit pumps, Walsh's Garage which is still there and may not have sold fuel and this one in Barkway, previously Power and Butler before that. Then the Shell garage in Hare Street, also now demolished with the VW dealer MJ Warner nearly opposite also probably once having sold petrol. It's quite a list!

It was quite a variety of brands which was normal for a B road which this has been since the 1920s, before that it was unclassified.

Here the Barkway Service Station is pictured in the snow, I took a distant shot too to highlight that rare snowfall for our area. I hope this one survives or one of my favourite roads in England will have lost a little more of its charm. If you've never driven this stretch of road you should, it's a very pretty route!

Below you can see it was it was as a Power site a few years back.
