Former Petrol Station - Fry's Garage, Tedburn St Mary, Exeter, EX6 6EB 2
This is a brilliant older style garage still standing after all these years and indeed still a working garage. Lucky for me I was staying in the local pub literally a hundred yards down the road from here so I took the opportunity for some very early morning photos before breakfast! There are a fair few photos of this place both on Flickr and on the internet in general, but most of the non Flickr ones are Alamy stock photos and don't go any further back in time than the earliest one on Flickr, a bit of a disappointment as I really hoped there might have been one from the previous century. Anyway, there was an older pump to the left end of the building clearly seen in the earlier Streetview shots but now gone, otherwise little has changed in the last fifteen years. The pump decals have faded more than in the oldest image where they are clearly a blue and an orange stripe across the top section of the cabinet - makes me think of Anglo or Repsol or maybe Heltor. I'd love to know when petrol was last served from here, I suspect maybe twenty five years ago or so. The building shows so much delightful weathering, it hasn't seen much paint for decades! Obviously the bypassing of this road which was once the A30 would have had an impact on business but not so badly as the other garage that was here, there was a BP site down the road beyond the Kings Arms where I was staying - I totally missed that but to be fair i only walked past it in the dark and it doesn't clearly look like it was a petrol station although as Dan mentions in his photo the old pole sign is still standing and perhaps modified directly from the old BP sign of years passed. you can see his photo here

I should point out that the pole sign was on the other side of the road! If you look at Dan's photo be sure to scroll down as there are other images he took and another longer distance view of some quality taken by John Luxton.
Anyway, back to Fry's Garage. Not only are there many older images kicking around on the internet, there's also one of a model someone made based on the place and imagined as a Shell garage in perhaps the 1950s. You can see that added below in the comments along with a 2007 photo taken by Tim Jenkinson. I'm hoping that Dan Lockton will be able to add some more history of this site as he was clearly here in the past!
