Bulldog - M & J Ellis, 1 Yarmouth Road, Hemsby, Norfolk NR29 4NJ 5th June 1988

This is a lovely image showing a relatively rare sighting of the Bulldog brand, once highly prevalent in East Anglia for many smaller garages. The brand was one owned by Carless and they would switch many of these sites to the Anglo brand which they also owned not so long after this photo was taken. The garage we see here still exists in the present day, now known as Crossroads Garage, you can see an image of it taken in 2019 below. Hemsby once had quite a few petrol stations in various locations through time, the building to the right we see here was in the very distant past also a retailer of fuel - you can see a very old image showing a National Benzole pump outside from quite possibly before the war, also below.

Here we see that M & J Ellis were Ford dealers and were announcing the arrival of the "new" Ford Fiesta, not sure which mark that would have been but maybe the mark 3 Fiesta? The shorter lived Ford Orion is also being heavily promoted. Across the road we see a nice range of models, some older for the era and some very new. The Vauxhall and I think Hillman Avenger estate look relatively old compared to the pair of Volvos, one being a 300 series model that I so detest! There's also a Metro just poking its nose into the scene. In the distance the sign for Hemsby Television Rentals is an indicator of how much times have changed!

The garage had a pair of Veeder Root pumps outside almost adjacent to each other meaning at best two cars could fill up at any one time.
