Esso - The Tower, 617 Finchley Road, London 28th Dec 1994

These are the two remaining two images I have of this landmark garage in North London. Sadly it no longer exists, it was demolished a few years ago and the most recent Streetview image shows construction seemingly about the begin. If anyone has been past here more recently and can tell me what has happened since it'd be interesting to know - I am expecting some high rise block of flats to appear! Actually from this angle that is exactly what has happened - it looks hideous as of August 2021!

In its heyday, which was really a long time before this photo was taken, The Tower Garage in Finchley Road was a real landmark and some seriously beautiful architecture. Its main feature was of course the tower which had a giant clock-face on it on at least three sides and would have been visible from some distance away. Even in early days it seemed to be tied to a single brand which was Regent. This ties in nicely with it later on being run by Blue Star Garages who were pretty much always tied to Regent and then subsequently Texaco from 1967 onwards after the Regent name was phased out in favour of Texaco. Sadly by the time this photo was taken the site had been entirely rebuilt but with the inclusion of a new tower looking quite like the old one but not quite the same. We can't see that in this photo but it can be seen in Richard's photo which you can see below after the earlier images of it from the pre-war era and the early 1970s and later 1980s.
