Former Petrol Station - Bowman Brothers, Shelfanger, Norfolk 6
These maybe the final edition of photos of this place I will post. Since my last visit the pole sign and all the garage signs have gone and only two of the pumps now remain. Along with the garage now closed for a couple of years nearby are two houses, one which was once the post office for the village and beyond that a former pub, the Crown Inn show the slow and steady decline of facilities for not only this village but many across the region and indeed the country. Bowman Brothers garage was of course once a busy place but bit by bit trade would have fallen away and especially for petrol sales but one can also bring increased car reliability and the computerisation of modern cars as reasons why small village garages have been in decline for the last twenty five years. Below you can see a number of eras of its operation, way back as a Little David, then later as a Butler and thriving, then much more recent and still branded Butler and then just a couple of years ago after its closure but before the pole sign was taken out and the middle pump also removed. This little sign is grimly hanging on showing along with the two pumps left that it's no so long since petrol was being dispensed here.
