Shell - Bells Garage, 39 The Village, Haxby, North Yorkshire YO32 2HU late 1960s

This is a nice view of Bells Garage, Haxby, taken from the edge of St Marys Church on The Village. A lorry full of milk churns blocks off some of the view of the forecourt but the only pump globes clearly visible indicate this was probably a Shell garage - certainly they sold Shell but there might have been another brand, most likely BP if there was. On the forecourt too are a decent number of cars, couple of Anglias and I think a Popular and a Morris Minor and maybe a Morris Oxford. Further away are slightly more modern looking cars so this is probably a late 1960s photo, it might even just be 1970. A bus trundles up The Village into view, another nice feature of this image. Bells Garage did not last, it was eventually bought to turn into a supermarket, now a Sainsbury but not sure if it was when first opened. The owner of Bells Garage, Jim Pulleyn, moved to a site nearby in Wigginton and opened the Two Jays Service Station which lasted until into the Streetview era before finally changing ownership and name, now it is the Top Gear Garage. Both sites sold ICI petrol and this one did so very soon after this photo was taken. There are wonderful photos of both this garage and the other site in Wigginton on Facebook with a brief history of the sites given and to be truthful where I found out most of the information written above! It would seem that Rally cars played a big part in the lives of both garages and plenty of such cars can be seen in the photos.

The same view today is not so exciting with the aforementioned Sainsbury now occupying the site but here it is anyway.
